Putting my predictive skills to the test... here are a few people I think will make a big splash this year.

First off, the obvious choice. Kitsuné sign-ons Two Door Cinema Club have made it on to everyone's "watchlist" for the new year and this list is no exception. Delightfully catchy, the band is bound to score big this year. If you're lucky enough to be in Europe, make sure to see them live as they continue to tour extensively.

Judging from their latest single "Blueberry," new material from Late of the Pier is definitely worth listening to. Since the "death of electro," the lads from Castle Donington have taken given us a taste of what's next in music. I welcome their foray into spectacular drug-addled psychedelic electronic rock.

Fear of Tigers released a magical debut record last month. More recently, they released a surreal remix of Visage's "Fade to Grey." 2009 was just the tip of the iceberg. Keep up the amazing work!

A few of the latest tracks from Yeasayer have leaked, and I like what I'm hearing. "Madder Red" stood out for me. It seems like the band is following the synthpop trend by electrifying their sound. Good call. Be sure to check them out on their European tour starting in February and in North America in the spring.

According to the free charity calendar I've been using all year, New Year's Eve is a full moon. This is the cherry on top of an already super-hyped NYE. I've learned to lower the bar -- I just hope I make it into 2010 alive. It would make my night if I heard at least a few good tracks played. I'm not asking for the midnight slot (like I said, lowered expectations).

The following are some choice remixes I've particularly enjoyed this past year.

I blogged about this gem back in August as one of the Fucking Best Remixes Ever, so yeah... it's pretty good. Fever Ray and Rex the God join forces:

Oh yes, it's yet another top ten album list for 2009. The end of year wrap-up post is really the only ritual I've managed to keep up with, probably because it's relatively easy (once a year) and for a good cause (internet participation...? blog citizenship...?). Plus, it's interesting to see whether in a year from now I'll still be listening to what I thought were the best of the entire year. Judging by last year's list, I can't say I've been listening to School of Seven Bells as much as one would think. Here's what I've been into instead...

10. Sonic Youth The Eternal

When compared to other Sonic Youth records, The Eternal is probably at the median. When compared to other albums of 2009, it's my number 10 pick. It's got everything you'd expect from the band which means loads of variety. You've got your zany guitar, instrumental meandering, honest couplets, noise, streams of consciousness, acoustic cameos, short tracks, long tracks... The record is Eternal because the band is here to stay.

9. A Place to Bury Strangers Exploding Head

It's hard to deny that 2009 was a huge year for accessible noise-ish music. Who knew this would be the year when a slew of bands decided to channel The Jesus and Mary Chain all at once? 24 years after Psychocandy was long enough, eh? Exploding Head adds more to the shoegaze + noise formula, drawing upon psychedelic and classic rock influences. It's an exciting ride that may not make your head explode, but it will blow your mind. APTBS' sophomore record transports me to another world.

8. Yuksek Away From the Sea

Monsieur Pierre-Alexandre Busson seems to be single-handedly keeping electro alive while Justice are M.I.A., maybe chilling in Osama Bin Laden's cave for all we know. Yuksek not only put out a great party album, but he churned out quality remix after remix. 2009 was his year, but I know it's just the beginning. We cannot wait to hear what he's been cooking up in the studio.

7. The Horrors Primary Colours

This... is... The Horrors?! What a transformation. They're still dark and noisy, but now they actually seem to give a fuck. Their latest effort is interesting, stylish, and sounds like the best bits from every great British band from the 1980s. With Primary Colours, The Horrors have established themselves as a musicians, not a bunch of guys with crazy hair in tight pants.

6. The Big Pink A Brief History of Love

Remember when I said 2009 was a great year for noise? I really meant it, and here's more evidence. The Big Pink fused shoegaze and noise influences with compelling pop accessibility -- not bad, eh? We were hooked on "Too Young to Love early in 2009, followed by the insanely catchy (read: radio friendly) single "Dominos" which became a huge success as the soundtrack to good times, and then "Velvet" melted our hearts.

5. Röyksopp Junior

Contrary to the last few picks, here's a pick-me-up record that is anything but noise. My favourite Norwegian electronic duo Royksopp (sorry Datarock) released a fun and synth-tastic record. The best parts are the great collaborations with the likes of Robyn and Karin Dreijer Andersson. Some of Junior is very poppy (typical Scandinavian pop...), but it's balanced out with darker tracks. It's the best of both Röyskopp worlds.

4. Animal Collective Merriweather Post Pavillion

Yeah, I know. It's so obvious, but there's a reason why people put this record up somewhere in their top ten. Actually, any end of year album wrap-up that does not mention this record is probably not worth reading at all. Why? Merriweather combines the band's avant-garde and experimental antics with pop accessibility. The result? Beautiful and refreshing music to everyone's ears. The themes of human consumption, return to simplicity, and questioning the meaning of life are decade-defining. To me, this record is a multi-layered mindfuck.

3. Grizzly Bear Veckatimest

I've been looking forward to the new Grizzly Bear ever since I heard the demo and saw the live performance for "While You Wait for the Others" over a year ago. Now that the album has finally materialised, it's been well worth the wait. Veckatimest is obviously a carefully crafted album, with its intricate compositions and beautiful melodies and harmonies. Its simplicity is its greatest strength. Thanks, Grizzly Bear, for showing us how less really is more.

2. Fever Ray Fever Ray

I never had a doubt that Andersson solo would be anything but great. This record goes beyond my already high expectations. The lack of dancefloor applicability is strangely what makes me love this record (that's what remixes are for...). Fever Ray strips down to raw emotion that probably could not be achieved with an upbeat number. Soaring synths and spectacular vocals with a minimal flair firmly establish Andersson as an entity separate from The Knife. I just hope this isn't a one time thing.

1. Yeah Yeah Yeahs It's Blitz!

My number one pick goes to an album that embraces all the best of 2009. It's Blitz has maintained the band's signature no-bullshit attitude with post-punk, electronic, pop, noise, disco. It's mostly hard, but has it's vulnerable moments with the likes of "Hysteric" and "Runaway." The opener, "Zero," was practically a dancefloor anthem of the year. Most importantly, I think, is the tangible energy and performance delivered with every track. The album clearly shows how the band has evolved to a whole new level. With that, ladies and gentlemen... "dance 'til you're dead."

[MONTREAL] The final post on Pop Coverage is for all you fans of electronic music. There are two main acts to check out tonight -- Tobacco at midnight and Montréal native CFCF at 2 AM. I mostly know these guys for their amazing HEALTH remixes.

CFCF has remixed beyond HEALTH. Here's one of my all-time favourite remixes, which is so old it's practically a classic by now.

[MONTREAL] Pop coverage Day III: Friday. Sure, there's a lot going on, like Steve Aoki and Glass Candy, but nothing up my alley. Maybe it's for the best, as I stumbled into four seperate shows at three different venues last night. Needless to say, I am hurting.

Tomorrow night, on the other hand... a big show is expected to take place in Rosemount. Local heroes Think About Life and Parlovr are playing accessible, fun pop at Place Ubisoft. The finest of the "second wave" of Montréal indie bands...? It's about time these guys got "indie" famous.

[MONTREAL] Alright, I realise my coverage is one day ahead of Pop Montréal festivities. I'm rectifying the issue.... now. Remember when I posted about Fever Ray? If you're not into paying $35 to stand in a cold venue to see a creepy Swedish woman sing in a cloud of dry ice, don't worry! There is a lot more going on tonight. Such is the nature of the "festival" -- heaps of bands are all playing at the same time. Amazing, right?

Of all the alternative options to Fever Ray, may I suggest heading up to Mont-Royal for more feel-good (and budget-friendly) times. O Patro Vys is hosting a fun little international line-up:

...a virtual United Nations! The individual Canadians are into the singer-songwriter scene. With Divine Right and The William Blakes, however, expect a more collective, love-thy-neighbour feeling. This is quite possibly the furthest away from the Fever Ray experience you can get.

[MONTREAL] This year, Halloween is going to be at the beginning of October... and it's all thanks to Fever Ray . Day II of Pop is all about giving you goosebumps. In the most abstract terms, think cool morning mist, coniferous forests, white embers and Twin Peaks. Need I say more? Just go -- the gig's at Metropolis tomorrow night (1 October).

Dear reader, these are four up and coming songs I've been into this past fortnight. I think these artists still haven't reached their peak in appreciation/popularity. Using what little power I have... I encourage you to look out for these artists. These fellows deserve your undivided attention.

Sharing a hometown with the legendary Soulwax is a definite plus and obvious influence on these lads. Officially, Ghent is the best city in Belgium.

To be clear, Fever Ray's third single "Triangle Walks" is an amazing song on its own. Naturally, it generated its fair share of remixes, and the work of Rex the Dog rose above the rest. Just taking some time out of my outrageously busy schedule to share a brilliant mix from over two months ago. Yeah, that's practically pre-historic in internet terms but this is too good to pass up. Snore & Guzzle posted a fake Wes Anderson film soundtrack - The Cloud Photographers. Ha! It was crafted by Nicholas Gurewitch, creator of one of the best web comics out there, The Perry Bible Fellowship. His Wes Anderson satire is spot on. It's hard not to enjoy the Anderson's movie soundtracks, but come on... even Wes' fans must admit they're the definition of cookie cutter. Delicious cookies yes, but lacking in variety.

London Calling Amsterdam

London Calling is a biannual music festival held at Amsterdam's Paradiso that features up and coming acts from the UK. This April 30th to May 2nd, the event will celebrate their 16th year. Relatively well-established people like Erol Alkan and Little Boots will perform alongside actual up and coming bands like Micachu and Two Door Cinema Club.

I would recommend this festival anyone who lives off the Hype Machine. That means everyone. Here's a sampler of some personal favourites attending...

Patrick Wolf has selected "Vulture" as the first single for his upcoming album, Bachelor. (Wasn't it originally titled Battle? No matter.) He's released an... interesting video for it. But the album release date has been pushed back several times now. It's now set for June 1. According to the NME, he's looking for The Cheeky Girls as collaborators for said album. Um... what? Wolf's thinking about having a "Transylvanian-themed section" on the record.

First off, that would be a such weird collaboration, but whatever he does will be amazing so I'm not worried. Second, I don't know much about the recording arts, but... is there much time to think about an entire section of the record with the release in 6-7 weeks? Maybe this is all normal and just seems strange because we often aren't exposed to the album recording process.

The Shoes are probably one of the most creative remixers out there. I love how they add their own quirky flair to each of their productions. That is, the use of speech synthesizers. Their latest is Esser's new single "Work It Out." Some people may say The Shoes used the exact same formula for Primary 1's "Hold Me Down" released last year. I say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Remember when I used to blog?

That was before I crossed the Atlantic. It feels good to blog again, though I can't make any promises on posting regularly. Sorry, it's been a bit crazy living in the lands of the nether. But I can try not to go on month-long hiatuses again. My bad! So... what happened in February?

Here's the fourth installment of the never ending series... the fucking best remixes ever.

This one's kind of obvious; it's living legends New Order crossed with remixer extraordinaire Phones. Though I adore New Order, their 2005 single "Krafty" is definitely not one of my favourites. It's a little too pop for my taste. Phones speeds up and evens out the track with some crazy warped basslines.

The "reality" is, this remix could be mistaken as a renegade piece of Stuart Price's repertoire. Amazing.

Eine Kleine Riton - Resurrected

As suggested by the German title, it's got some prominent krautrock elements, but the overall sound is very 21st century. This is just one of the gorgeous tracks off the album. Because I don't usually give a care about award ceremonies, and I don't really listen to RJD2, this post is an ultra rare exception. The Golden Globes were last night, and AMC's Mad Men took best TV drama for the second year in a row. Bearing in mind the series is only two seasons old... that's two for two. I reckon that's quite swell.

Mad Men is huge and doesn't really need much more promotion. After all, a show about advertising should probably have the best campaigns around. Despite all the ads, the series genuinely earned its many awards and favourable reviews. If you haven't seen it, this little blogger highly recommends that you at least try it. I suppose the gratuitous office drinking, smoking, and sex of early 1960s New York may not be for everyone.

Like so many other music lovers out there, I give mix CDs to the people I care about each year for Christmas. It's kind of a weird gift; essentially the giver offers 80 minutes worth of music the recipient should listen to... "Merry Christmas, listen to these songs instead of whatever you listen to now." Admittedly, I know some people who could seriously benefit by broadening their musical horizons. But most people I know think for themselves, and they can do whatever they want with the gift. Though obviously I'd like them to enjoy the mix. Last year I decided the compact disc was outdated technology, so now I give out zipped files. Is that going too far?

'Tis the season for top ten lists. What kind of blog wouldn't? Considering last year's aggregate "best of" list... this list is, strangely, kind of important to me. It better not get fucking DMCA'd.

10. Metronomy, Nights Out

Metronomy are really quite something different. They've managed to maintain their signature "experimental" sound but have ventured into more accessible territory with Nights Out. Popular songs like "A Thing For Me" and "Heartbreaker" are mixed in with instrumental Kraftwerk-influenced tracks. There's a lot happening, yet at the same time it's really cohesive. [Amazon]

9. School of Seven Bells, Alpinisms

School of Seven Bells' electronic choral arrangements are hypnotic. Alpinisms reminds me of Alaska in the Winter's Dance Party in the Balkans of last year, but on anti-depressants. I could probably be more articulate but it's one of those albums I'd need to wrap my head around before being able to describe it. My Bloody Valentine's Loveless is all over this track:

8. Foals, Antidotes

My, what skilled musicians! (Not being sarcastic.) Though Foals got overwhelming hype (and Hype) this year, I think they genuinely deserve it. Perhaps I am biased because their live show was one of the best of my life. Regardless, Antidotes is a "trendsetter" -- guaranteed in 2009, there will be loads of Foals knock offs. [Amazon]

7. Hercules and Love Affair, Hercules and Love Affair

DFA strikes again. I never thought I'd admit to liking anything disco. "Blind" pretty much changed my view on the entire genre, and it's not even my favourite off the album.

6. These New Puritans, Beat Pyramid

Post-punk 2008: the band has raw energy and a brazen attitude. I really can't say much more about the intensity. There are no words. Just listen. And of course their live set is killer. [Amazon]

5. Crystal Castles, Crystal Castles

When this record came out in March, we were all pretty comfortable with Crystal Castles' practically patented 8-bit sound. Who knew they could take it up a notch and add some variety to the mix? They show off their unbelievable remix skills with "Untrust Us" and "Vanished" and some originality with "Courtship Dating" and "Black Panther." If the album were made up of those four tracks alone, their S/T would still be in my top ten.

4. Cut Copy, In Ghost Colours

A wildly popular favourite, probably because it's got something for everyone. Soaring melodies, sweet love songs, and enchanting instrumental work... it's pop perfection. This album is going to be timeless. [Amazon]

3. Late of the Pier, Fantasy Black Channel

It's no secret that I love Late of the Pier. After a couple EPs were released in 2007, the world was waiting for the band's first full-length. And the wait was worth it. It's comprised of insanely catchy tracks with an underlying sinister tone. Booming anthems like "Focker" and "Bathroom Gurgle" have rightfully established the band as not a Klaxons copy. Late of the Pier are dirtier and DTFucking kill it on the dancefloor.

2. HEALTH, HEALTH//DISCO

If there's anything better than HEALTH, it's got to be HEALTH remixed. This album features some of the best remixers in the business, resulting in true quality. This is no surprise, as a lot of talent and creativity is required to remix HEALTH. Each song is a carefully crafted treasure. [Amazon]

1. M83, Saturdays = Youth

This choice, more than others, reflects my own personal background. You see, I am in love John Hughes' movies. How M83 was able to capture the feelings of American teenagers in the 1980s is kind of a miracle. Whether it's the happy melancholy-angst of "Graveyard Girl" or the adolescent idealism of "We Own The Sky," the album takes the listener to an entirely different world... the world of Molly Ringwald, poofy hair and prom, without completely losing touch with 2008. Saturdays = Youth is time travel, which only a handful of records can do.

Ugh, Fake Blood. If I hear "MARS" one more time I think I might hurl. Yes, unfortunately the song has been D.A.N.C.E.-ified. Guaranteed in 2009 it will be the rager of choice for the middle school and thirty-year-olds desperately holding onto their "youth" and everyone in between... you know, the same people who still listen to Justice.

Okay, so that was a bit harsh on Fake Blood/A Black Ghost/DJ Touché/Theo Keating. (Why so many aliases?)

Pop Montréal 2008

It's that time of the year again. Every year in early October, a bunch of bands just happen to stumble into Montréal on tour. Way back in 2002, conveniently at the height of the world's fascination with Montréal as a music "hot spot," a few people had the brilliant idea of calling this short musical phenomeon a festival. Pop Montréal was born.

Okay, so I'm a big supporter of the music industry and all, but seriously, I think it's unnecessary to create such a big deal about a few days of live music. Do the big international names of the festival come to Montréal just to participate in this "special event"? I highly doubt Nick Cave, Ratatat, or Hot Chip had even heard of it. The purpose of any tour for the big guys is to promote albums. It's been like that since the dawn of time. Besides, the vast majority of the festival's artists end up in Toronto and New York either the day before or after touring Montréal. Essentially, it's nothing that special.

To call the event a "five-day party" in a city where literally hundreds of things that can be classified as a party happen every day is what really gets me. Has the festival abandoned its "grass roots" ideals (if it ever had any to begin with) for shameless promotion?I know it's funded by the Province and the City so attracting peoples' dollars is clearly a priority.

Despite all this, Pop Montréal actually has some pretty interesting and, dare I say, unique attributes. The partnership with McGill University's Music School that began last year gives the festival some much needed legitimacy. I'm not sure if the partnership still stands for this year though. Their latest initiative, Kids Pop, is also pretty cool. It's certainly a huge plus for all those alt-families in Montréal (and there are a lot).

The festival does give opportunities for up-and-comers or new artists. But when I look through the festival promo material, the little guys don't come across as the focus, at least not as much as other like-minded festivals (and partners), NXNE in Toronto and SXSW in Austin. Well, at least Montréal has something to call its own in the music-film-art-culture festival department. Take that, Toronto!

Two of my posts have disappeared... forever. I can't believe it. I spent a lot of time on those fuckers. I don't delete my own posts; that was the work of a higher power -- Blogger (a.k.a. Google). Apparently, I violated the Digital Millennium Copyright Act with my coverage on The Toxic Avenger. What exactly I did wrong, they didn't tell me. Why they had to delete my Requiem for Summer post wasn't justified at all.

Is this normal for music blogs? There are thousands of mp3s floating around the internet -- so why me? Why now? Best Tour Concept of 2008

A-Trak and Boys Noize are making a statement, and I like that. They're saying -- "please come see us play sweet shit from our respective record labels. By the way, we have unibrows and we are bros so we've created a marketable portmanteau to promote the hell out of the tour." Or at least that's what happened in my cracked out imagination.

I am more than happy to do my part in promoting the world's most famous unibros. A-Trak's shows are such a laugh. Between every three songs or so, he will take the mic and say "Fooooools Gold..." in a slow, deep voice. He can be pretty talkative for a DJ. Boys Noize is amazing particularly because knows exactly what to play to get the crowd going. I don't need to go into how much talent both of them have, that's a given.

I'm not ecstatic about Running Man, but I love my Dirty South Dance so here's a little taste of A-Trak mashup.

Doesn't Offend Me, No

This is just another blog posting about just another British "electro" "indie" band with a fanbase whose median age is 16. What makes this band different? Does It Offend You, Yeah? happen to be touring in my area in support of their new album and latest single "Dawn of the Dead." They also made a Japanese band logo, which is pretty impressive. Everyone knows there's loads of untapped market potential in Japan.

Okay, but seriously, is this band made to last or is it as gimmicky as Flipchart Hiatus? Despite the most gimmicky name in the blogosphere, I think Does It (or DIOYY for the hardcore bloggers) is much more versatile than other bands of the British electro/indie/NME Cool List persuasion. They do hard synthy instrumental pieces, addictive pop, and whiny vocals reminiscent of that genre lightly referred to as "pop punk." Though some of their material is icky, I appreciate the variety. Besides, we all love a band that is able to make remixes and get remixed.

Seriously, what's the deal with MSTRKRFT? Of course they've been around for aeons (in blog years) and everyone from my grandmother to the postman know who they are. Basically, the whole world embraced the famed Moss Park electro-duo after The Looks.

Remember the first time you heard "Easy Love"? Those were the days. The first time I Iistened to "Vuvuvu" and "Bounce" on the other hand, were a bit... disappointing. On the bright side, when MSTRKRFT put on a show shortly after their latest releases, I was pretty impressed with all the bros in the audience. I've never seen such a popped-collared, beer-guzzling, fist-pumping crowd in my life. Except maybe at a Girl Talk or Justice show.

More recently, the extreme young and old are known to attend a MSTRKRFT show. Remember what happened in Los Angeles?

Going to a MSTRKRFT show means taking in everything, both good and bad. The good is seeing pretentious hipster d-bags in disbelief that a jolly legion of fratboys know the single lyric to "Work on You." The bad is MSTRKRFT's new material. And the infants.

Do you enjoy the songs of In Ghost Colours? Do you think you'll never get enough of the masterpiece simply known as "Out There On The Ice"?

According to the sounds of their latest album, it seems like Cut Copy were sure paying close attention to Electronic music in their childhood and youth. That was no typo, I do mean Electronic with a capital E -- they were an early 1990s electronic (duh) band made up of Bernard Sumner (of Joy Division, New Order) and Johnny Marr (of The Smiths).

I've blogged this once and I'll blog it again -- the best music ever made came from Manchester.

The beast known as the Samsquamtch, the Saskatchewan, the Sasquatch, or most commonly Bigfoot has finally been captured on party pic DSLR. Who knew the highly elusive North American beast would be hanging out in Montréal's Jupiter Room for Mod Club night.

What I see here's a sneak preview for the best of fall/winter 2008 trends. The samsquamtch has got all of this season's hottest styles -- the fringe bangs, the American Apparel hoodie, and a three month shaving boycott. He's a beast, yet he seems so approachable. Prepare yourself for the over-scruffed, "I live in a forest" look this fall. It's not easy to pull off. You'll probably have a better chance of killing the look in Canada, where most people are knowledgeable about the samsquamtch.

The Twelves are back in the game my friends. They recently released a remix for that popular salad dressing jingle, "The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song." Like most people in the remix production industry, The Twelves took on some Swedish indie poppers. Their remix of Zeitgeist's "Humanitarianism" sounds so Falke. Either this song is labelled wrong, or The Twelves has shifted gears a bit. It's always nice to see producers switching up styles. And if they are moving toward the French touch stylings of Fred Falke, I'm all for it.

American Apparel in the Mainstream

American Apparel is so mainstream that it was mentioned in the Toronto section of today's Globe and Mail. I've been waiting for something bloggable from "Canada's National Newspaper." The story is that the advert pictured above (which is also hanging above AA Yonge & Gould) offends people. The same debate that comes up about every two seconds in our material world -- does this objectify or empower women?

So you're probably thinking either: A. what story? or B. Canada's National Newspaper is for lames. Well, both those thoughts crossed my mind after reading this piece of "journalism." The backstory of the author, Dakshana Bascaramurty, is that she's a 20-something that mostly writes about retail. I was also wondering if she happens to read that really famous news portal and blog, The Huffington Post? 'Cause they totally told the same story almost a year ago.

To be honest, I don't think stories about advertising companies objectifying women have got any place in the news. Mainly because it isn't news; this has been going on for ages. Sex sells, get used to it. By that I mean sex has been used to sell products for at least the last fifty years, please get on with it. The only "twist" to this story was that the picture was photographed by the model/"artist" Kyung Chung herself. But that little detail hardly warrants news coverage.

And to be completely honest, the more people take offense to these sexualized adverts, the more exposure they get and the more likely the trend will continue. So if you're really not comfortable with the anal shots, perhaps you should find a better way to voice your complaints -- i.e. not through mainstream media.

As you may recall, the audio K7 is on its way out. Old fashioned gramophone records, however, are actually increasing in popularity. What gives? Perhaps the nostalgia plays a part, but there is no doubt that the rise of DJ culture is giving vinyl some boost. Yeah, it's true a lot of DJs nowadays rely solely on a Macbook attached to a thing with a bunch of knobs and buttons they like to play around with every once in a while. But I figure those with true talent -- Erol Alkan, A-Trak, to name a few -- still carry around boxes of vinyl.

Except for the 2 minutes Erol Alkan spins Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams," unfortunately these DJs don't seem to pull out anything made before February 2008, and certainly nothing from Northern England. "Dancing in Chains" is the first single off their second EP, Blink, and it became a hit on CBC Radio 3. The video is pretty interesting, it looks like it was shot in Japan, tastefully using the notorious street culture of Tokyo.

Sooo many Fred Falke remixes came out this summer.

We just can't get enough. If this were a corny blog, I would say his remixes have that je ne sais quoi that makes him so popular. Using such a cliché, however, doesn't explain why we like him. There's no doubt he has some high quality production skills; he can make anything sound good. Remember when he remixed that mystery band Ronald Clark and the Montanas? Most people would raise an eyebrow at the a band with a name that suggests some kind of country/1950s oldies music fusion. Oh, but it's a Fred Falke remix? A must listen, no questions asked.

I think the main reason why Falke is so successful is that he has the extraordinary ability to maintain his distinct sound for all of his endeavours. (There is no fucking je ne sais quoi. I hear d-bags call it "French touch" though.) When you're downloading a Falke remix, you basically know what to expect. People like familiarity. And if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Requiem for the Mixtape

After reading a New York Times article, I got a little nostalgic about mixtapes. Not that I've ever made a mixtape, nor do I own a cassette player. I have some hazy memories of my childhood involving "Classical Music for Children" tapes playing in the car during the long road trip to Grandma and Grandpa's house.

Cassettes really took off in 1979 and sales of portable cassette players peaked in 1994. So yeah, I guess I am fully immersed in the mix CD/mix mp3 playlist generation. Now that cassettes are not going to be made anymore (like them Polaroids), mixtapes will be even more special. Just ask Thurston Moore.

To me, making a tape is like writing a letter -- there's a lot of erasing and re-thinking and starting again. A good compilation tape, like breaking up, is hard to do. You've got to kick off with a corker, to hold the attention... and then you've got to up it a notch, or cool it a notch, and you can't have white music and black music together, unless the white music sounds like black music, and you can't have two tracks by the same artist side by side, unless you've done the whole thing in pairs and... oh, there are loads of rules.

The same rules apply for mix CDs/.m3u files. But receiving a 45 MB attachment in an email (or via instant message) is shit compared to getting a cassette with a homemade cover in person or by post. Summer 2008 is the last summer of cassettes and polaroids. Enjoy it while we're still living in a world where these bits of nostalgia are still available. Make a mixtape, pass it on.

The Tough Alliance is yet another Swedish indie-electro-pop group. Their video for "Neo Violence" starts out very 80s new wave. When the band members are all dressed in white in a white room, it totally reminds me of this groundbreaking video. But then they get all Daft Punk on us with a lit up pyramid and a neon light show. I guess they're pretty deep.

I think the band members of The Tough Alliance each have long lost American cousins that make up MGMT. The dead giveaway is in the crazy yet accessible tribal rhythms used by each band. Perhaps that guy from MGMT takes it a bit too far.Until we see pictures of The Tough Alliance decked out in tribal tattoos, comparisons with MGMT are pretty limited.

You may have heard the news that SebastiAn of the Ed Banger clan is set to release a remix album on September 1. Praise be to Busy P (for once). Maybe Mr. P caught on to the decline of his "hooligan disco." I mean, it's been a year since the Justice boom. Uffie is a complete mess. The latest addition, Mickey Moonlight, has yet to please us.

After reading last week's Pitchfork interview, it's clear that he is too old to know WTF is going on. My evidence lies in a couple of key quotations...

"I discovered MySpace in 2005, maybe a little bit before it blew up."

"I listened to Kraftwerk when I was little, and I decided that I like repetitive electronic music when I discovered Deee-Lite's "What Is Love" in 1990. I got introduced to the rave scene in 1992."

MySpace in 2005? Raving in 1992? Huh? The announcement of SebastiAn's release, however, redeemed himself a little bit. SebastiAn is one of the best bangers out there, particularly in terms of remixes. On the other hand, most of the CD is re-hash of old material. Well, we're looking forward to it anyway.

It's official -- Lykke Li's single "I'm Good, I'm Gone" has been remixed to maximum capacity. I recently stumbled upon the remix done by UK producer Metronomy. I didn't know how else the song can be done, but Metronomy's unique style definitely brought something fresh to the table. Lykke Li must be loving the high quality remix attention, what with her upcoming album and supporting tour next month.

I admire them Black Kids for remixing a song Fred Falke has already French-touched. That takes major balls. Anyway, their work on Swedish indie pop sensation Lykke Li's "I'm Good, I'm Gone" is actually quite enjoyable. Thankfully they took a completely different angle than Mr. Falke with their remix by putting in more guitar and shit.

Stumbling into an alternate universe...

There is actually a clothing manufacturer called Alternative Apparel [pictured above]. Finally, a direct competitor (or complete rip off?) for American Apparel [pictured below]. Quite obviously, they both sell plainclothes for alternative foax. Both have effectively locked into the alternative parent niche with baby clothing, and the lucrative 12-18 year old girl set with colourful leggings.

WTF is the difference, though? Alt Apparel is only online, and therefore unaccessible to mallrats, senior citizens, poor people, and those who can't read. And so, is Alternative Apparel actually more alt than its American counterpart? Although their branding is lame (who would ever label themselves alternative?), I think it's supposed to be ironic.

But then again, they have a page of mainstream celebrities wearing their supposedly "Alternative" Apparel. Post-ironic? Like putting up an mp3 from 2003 on a blog in 2008?

No, this is not the Eastenders you're thinking about. Readers expecting soap opera gossip, I'm sorry to let you down. The Eastenders I'm referring to is a single by English "nu rave" group We Smoke Fags. Busy P once said that the "nu rave movement is already over." I guess this disagreement in music trends is just another factor contributing to uneasy Anglo-French relations, which has been going on for centuries.

Or maybe he's right (for once). Seriously, all these "nu rave" bands are popping up to fill the Klaxons void. Are they for real? Or just trying to cash in on another music fad amongst the lucrative 12-18 year old market? Do we care?

Remixes Ruining the World

It happened with "D.A.N.C.E.," and now it's happening again with Cut Copy's "Hearts On Fire." Too many remixes can ruin a song for everyone.

Remember when you had about twenty different remixes of "D.A.N.C.E." in your iTunes Library? That was a year ago, and now we're all so over that song. It was never that good to begin with, but now I hate it with a passion. The children's chorus reminds me of those creepy "children" of the corn.

But "Hearts On Fire" is catchy in a more legitimate way. I really liked the single when it was originally released back in 2007. But with the recent re-release, the remix overload began. Yes, it's a great track. No, don't ruin it for everyone by remixing it over and over again.

Due to an unfortunate series of events, I am avoiding "Hearts on Fire" in hopes that some day, I will be able to enjoy it again. Maybe in 2015 or so. It's not as hyped/mainstream as "D.A.N.C.E." but still. I guess I've learned my lesson (twice)... to establish quotas for remixes. The exception is any Klaxons remix. But they're not putting out any material anyway, I suppose I have nothing to worry about. Just to keep track of things...

I've noticed that some people aren't down with London's Chewy Chocolate Cookies. Their image and aesthetic is admittedly quite silly, but their remixes are seriously worth blogging about... namely their remix of "Pocket Piano" by DJ Mehdi (the unconventional banger). Delicious and sweet.

Pedro Winter can suck it. London's "italo disco" group Heartbreak is killing me right now. I don't really know what "italo disco" is, but I know the music is fresh and post-bangery. Not only is the production tight, they've covered David Bowie's "Loving the Alien" too. In conclusion, Heartbreak is definitely worth checking out. Buy their EP here.

BuffetLibre's "Rewind" 80s cover (and remix) project was released via website earlier this month. Major standouts include previously blogged about Sidechains' remix of "Into the Groove." Dozens of artists (mainly of the indie pop and electro persuasion) gave an 80s track of their choice a modern twist. All tracks are available for your downloading pleasure on their website.

One cover that I particularly enjoyed was Vitamins For You taking on the epic "Only You" by Yazoo. It's a sweet, electro-tinged version of a sweet song.

That Spank Rock producer and remixer extraordinaire XXXChange worked his magic on the latest from Brooklyn's "experimental" band Gang Gang Dance. There is no question that an XXXChange production will get hype, but do people feel the same way about an experimental non-mainstream band like Gang Gang Dance? I think yes, 'cause I believe remixes of bands like Health are some of the best tracks out there. When their new record Saint Dymphna comes out this September, expect to hear more GGD remixes. Cross your fingers for Crystal Castles.

Is it a commercial or is it a music video? Well, it's actually both. We all knew that mainstream artists Pharrell, Santogold, and Julian Casablancas collaborated for Converse. So the song is purely commercial, but did the video have to turn into a commercial too? If I were the average citizen watching TV and this video came up, I would continue to surf channels because this video looks like another Gap campaign. For serious.

I suppose this is the future of music videos. Corporate financial muscle is increasingly powering the flailing music industry. I don't think we should be surprised in the slightest. Music videos are a specific kind of advert. At first they were created to market an artist, a label, and an "image" for viewers to buy into. Why not market other products at the same time? Oh hi, product placement. Really, there is no big difference between older videos and the new "My Drive Thru." Both are advertising products; the latter just happens to be explicit.
